Greensburg, Kansas
Pam and I arrived in Greensburg, Kansas about noon on Thursday. We got here about the same time as our friends Kirk and Susan.
We are volunteering with the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church (UMC) Volunteers in Mission (VIM) Project to help with the rebuilding of Greensburg. Two years ago (May 4, 2007) an F-5 tornado ripped through the town cutting a two mile swath that virtually destroyed it. 90% of the town of 1500 was destroyed and 10 lives were lost.
We joined up with the contingent from Chapel Hill and are here for four days. The host church (First United Methodist of Greensburg) has worked with 1,080 volunteers from 64 teams who come into town to help. The current pastor and his wife arrived two months after the tornado.
Our main task was helping sheet rock a basement in a house that has been rebuilt.
