Quartzsite Memories - 2014

We are going to leave Quartzsite later this morning and move on down the road to the Yuma.  In addition to what I have already posted in the last few days, there are a number of things I will remember from our time here.

Campfires
Sunrises
Sunsets
Rising Moon
The mountains in the distance - the 'smoky' look.  Like Princeville, HI and the Great Smoky Mountains in TN.
And the wispy clouds in the sky
And one of the most unique breakfast ideas I've seen:
"Breakfast in a Bag"
Separate your 1 or 2 eggs, put everything you want in your freezer bag, add the eggs, put your name on it, let it boil for 13 minutes - take it out of the boiling water.  Add salt and pepper.  Eat.
The leaders of the rally, (Robert and Tiziana) did a great job with lots of behind the scenes work to pull off another great 'informal' rally.  They have been doing this for the last four or five years.
Here is a picture of them from a couple of years ago:
Kudos to them!

That is all for this edition of the Roadrunner Chronicles!  Until next time...

Things to do in Key West!

Yes - we are back in Key West for a few weeks.  I love this place!  Why?-you ask…

Because of there is so much to do and see.  And because of the:

  • Weather - even though it has rained 4 or 5 days in the last week, it is warm and we have had our share of sun!
Right now it is sunny and 81 degrees.
  • Sunsets - this is the view from our campsite

  • Habitat for Humanity - we hooked up the group again this year and joined them in a 'Brush With Kindness' effort in old town.  We stained floorboards for the wrap around porch.

  • Sloppy Joe's - popular tavern frequented by the regular and the famous, including Ernest Hemingway in the 1930's

  • Capt Tony's Saloon - where Sloppy Joe's was until they moved down the street.

  • The Audubon House was a real surprise.  Very interesting display of his 'Birds of the Florida Keys'.  My favorite is the Roseate Spoonbill.

  • The closest flea market is down in Big Pine Key, about 30 miles from KW.

  • We love the Old Town Trolley Tour - it goes around the entire island and tickets are good for two days.  While we were waiting to catch it, we struck up a conversation with Andy, who just happens to be VP of Marketing and Sales.  And he extended our tickets for a week!

On that happy note, I think we will wrap it up for this edition of the Roadrunner Chronicles!  Thank you so much for joining us.

As always, comments are always welcome!  Until next time...

Great times in Florida

We are here at the Manatee Cove FamCamp at Patrick AFB near Melbourne, FL.  It is very convenient to the beautiful beaches, a great fitness center on base, local shopping and Major League Baseball Spring Training.
The weather has been great so we are really enjoying it here.  Plus our campsite is right on the beach with a little bit of sand and some pretty great sunsets.
Viera is the home of the Washington Nationals MLB spring training and only about 10 miles down the road.  We got some mid-day tickets last week and enjoyed a great game between the Nats and the Atlanta Braves.
We also found time last weekend to visit another pretty good flea market.
But mostly we have been settling into a routine and getting some things done.  I washed the RV and am almost half way through putting a coat of Mother's Wax on it.  Hopefully I will be done in a day or two.

On Tuesday, they had a going away party / happy hour pot luck for the camp hosts that have been here for a number of years.  We didn't know them that well but decided to go and meet some people anyway. It started at the traditional 4:00 happy hour time.  At 5:00 PM at most bases, they play the Star Spangled Banner.
Pretty cool to see all our fellow campers rise and respectfully face the direction of the music.  We enjoy these get togethers because they continue to be a way we can get to know other people.  We met quite a few that evening and met one couple that had been full timers for eight years.

We are looking forward to some more nice weather and sunshine and plan to be here to be through the end of April.

That is it for this edition of the Roadrunner Chronicles.

Sunset at Key West

Each evening in Key West, there is a phenomenon known as the 'Sunset Celebration'.  Hundreds of folks gather each evening at Mallory Square to watch the sun go down.  It is quite an event!

Last week we went down for the sunset with Marge and George, new friends from the Sigsbee RV Campground where we are staying.
They have been to Key West a number of times and offered to go with us.  We found that Mallory Square was blocked off because they were filming an ESPN boxing match.

The Westin Hotel is right on the water about 100 yards from Mallory Square, so we got a table and had a beer and watched it all from there.
There were a lot of dinner cruise boats, charter boats returning after a day fishing and a few others.
A few days later, we returned to Mallory Square and all the 'regulars' were there.  It was a pretty interesting place.  We watched a few of the displays and vendors.
At times it was a little crowded but not too bad.  And one of the big cruise ships, 'Carnival Magic', was docked.
And the sunset was something to celebrate…
Thanks for joining us today on the Roadrunner Chronicles!  Until next time...
