RV-Dreams Rally - Last Full Day

Yesterday was a full day. We finished up the RV-Dreams Rally seminars with three topics:
  • Choosing Campgrounds/RV Parks
  • Workamping on the Road
  • Boondocking/Solar
All were very good. Finding a great campground with the right amenities at the right price takes some research sometimes. Howard did a great job of explaining how they go through that process. Workamping on the road is something Pam and I may do if we find the right situation. We probably won't look for something like that until next summer or fall.In the afternoon we had Open House for all those that were willing to show their RVs. There was two shifts so we all could have a chance to see other peoples rigs. That was fun. We had a steady stream of people. And then we got to go tour other folks' rigs.
Howard and Linda had a lot of folks go through their Keystone Cambridge 5th wheel.. They have made a number of modifications in drawers and shelves.Kermit and Lisa have a 40' motorhome and pull a 20' trailer for their clothes and toys business. They are from New Hampshire and ship products to 80 countries. They have quite an inventory and quite a story.Dinner was catered last night and we sat with Harvey and Nancy Bell and Charles Henry. They were a lot of fun. The pork chop was the largest I have ever seen. And it was good.
After dinner the festivities began with line dancing and square dancing. Everyone had a good time.
We watched for a while and then headed back to the Roadrunner for a little while before we called it a day. That's a wrap on the Roadrunner Chronicles for today - we appreciate you taking the time to check it out.

Friday at the RV-Dreams Rally

Brr- the wind blew hard over night and the weather turned colder. I woke up about 4:15 (53 degrees) with the awnings flapping over the slide outs. I had to go outside and make sure everything was ok. I saw a guy across the way doing the same thing.

It was another day of seminars and good information at the RV-Dreams Rally in Kerrville, TX. The agenda included such topics as:
  • No Right Way to Full-time -Evaluating the Options
  • Buying an RV - Pros, Cons & Must Haves
  • Packing Your RV your RV For Extended & Full-time Travel
In the afternoon we had a couple of folks talk about some items for sale.

Pat and Mike McFall sell Pressure Pro Tire Pressure Monitoring System. I have been thinking about getting that for a long time. It is the leading product in that category.

A sensor attaches to every tire on the RV and the toad (our Honda CRV, our towable or 'toad'). You program what readings should be reflected in each tire and it alarms if a tire reading is below 12% of what it should be.I went by Pat and Mike's rig and purchased a system that will be installed later today. Though it was a bit pricey ($735) it will give us more piece of mind as the Roadrunner travels down the road.

Donna and Ron sell BBQ grills called "Disk-It". They are very attractive and the food Donna cooked in the demo looked great! Ron even showed how to cook some popcorn. The legs have a number of decorative designs and it reminded me of cooking with a wok with propane. It looked very interesting. The legs can be dissassembled and set up takes about 6 minutes. It was priced under $400.

After the demos, we went back to the Roadrunner and watched some of the President's Cup golf tournament on TV.

Dinner in the red barn was a pot luck and those are always dangerous for me. I tend to overeat at those things. I almost ate too much again but stopped myself in time.

The best part of the evening was joining Charles and Ethel Henry for dinner. They are a very gracious couple from Jacksonville, FL. They have been RVers for 11 years and were a wealth of information. Plus they are just nice people.
After dinner Howard tried his first stint of "RV Humor with Howard". He had some good YouTube clips and some jokes. I had no idea Desi and Lucy did some shows about RVs in the 1950s.That wrapped another day in the life of the Roadrunner Chronicles. Thanks for letting us share it with you.

RV-Dreams Rally - Thursday, Day 2

One of the best things about the RV-Dreams Rally is meeting fellow enthusiasts. Some are full-timers like us but many are interested in pursuing the lifestyle and are part time or extended RVers. At each gathering, we try to sit with new folks we haven't met.Day 2 of the rally started out in the red barn for a series of morning presentations. They were packed with a lot of information. Howard and Linda shared speaking duties and covered the following topics:
  • Full-timing Preparations
  • Emotional Aspects of the Full-time decision
  • What does it Cost to Full-time?
We went from 9:00 - 1:00 with a few breaks. The information and questions/answers were very good. Pam and I could relate to it all. I think one of the better things we did was plan and prepare for full-timing and much of the information validated our approach.

The emotional aspects of leaving friends was not as hard on us as some. I think if one has a lot of family in an area and grandkids nearby, leaving is harder. Since Pam and I spent 20 years in the military, we grew to accept leaving and making new friends. The process of planning and leaving took us about two years, so I think it was easier for us than for some who decided quickly and went through the process in six months or less.

The cost and budget discussions were fascinating. We picked up some good ideas like establishing a Health Savings Account. We will have to check that out more.

After lunch Howard and Linda gave a demo on their Sea Eagle inflatable boats. They filled them up and took them out for a quick paddle around the Buckhorn Lake Ranch waters. Then the rest of the afternoon was open, so I was able to go see some of the President's Cup golf tournament on TV. I always like to watch that and the Ryder Cup which are held in alternating years. Phil Mickelson and his partner won their match, so I was happy. (I am a big Phil fan.)
Dinner was in the red barn and it centered around a chili cookoff. Fifteen contests entered so there was plenty of the delicious stew for all of us. The winners gathered for a photo. Pam brought an apple crisp dessert that was completely gone so I think they liked that too.
The evening events concluded with people doing a 'show and tell' of their favorite RV gadget. Here Linda is showing a wheel chock they use for their 5th wheel. It was very intersting to see what people came up with. One of the handy items we have picked up is a hitch linch pin for our Blue Ox towing system. The ones the came with it were hard to pull out when we were ready to disengage. This makes it a lot easier.

We broke up about 8:45 and I took Ed (our dog) out for one last quick walk before we called it a day.

It was another interesting a fun day at the rally. Looking forward to learning more! Thanks for following this edition of the Roadrunner Chronicles. Comments always welcome!

RV-Dreams Rally at Buckhorn Lake Resort

There are 80 some people registered for the RV-Dreams rally at Buckhorn Lake Resort. A number of us are parked around the putting green near the center of the property.

It is pretty cool to have greenskeeping equipment mowing the grounds and keeping the grass well manicured. We really like the facility and accommodations.

Buckhorn also has a big red barn which is where we will eat a few meals and listen to the seminars.
Putting on a rally takes lots of work. A few of us helped out by stuffing information and candy into bags and putting name tags into name tags holders. The registration table got set up and some of Linda's RV-Dreams jewelry was on display and for sale. Meanwhile Howard got the projector and sound system set up.
Nelson and his wife Evelyn from Millenium Luxury Coaches were on the grounds and showing off three Prevost motor coaches they have for sale. Pam and I decided to take a tour through three models and it was quite interesting. They had a 2001, a 2003 and a 2008 for sale.

It was nice of them to take some time and explain some things and answer all our questions. Nelson had designed an LCD TV that swivels and is mounted below in one of the bays which was a nice feature. These coaches were way out of our range (selling for $400,000+ to $989,000) but it was interesting to see. If we are near Sanford, FL we intend to take a tour of their factory.

The first event of the Rally was a catered dinner in the barn. It was terrific! We had beef, chicken, potatoe salad and cole slaw, bean and iced tea. Dessert of peach cobbler and ice cream was also served.
After dinner, everyone was introduced. The rally is for anyone interested in the RV lifestyle. We had some people who have been at it full-time for over 5 years and quite a few who were there to see if the RVing was for them.

Next, we were divided up into groups and tasked with listing as many 'RV tips and techniques' on topics such as: arrival set-up and departure; safety; cooking; maintenance and budget/cost cutting ideas.

It was a great start to the rally and we are looking forward to the next few days! It looks like it is going to be a lot of fun and very informative.

Thats about it for this edition of the Roadrunner Chronicles. Thanks for stopping by. If you have never left a comment, feel free to do so~we really appreciate those.

Buckhorn Lake Resort

We are very impressed with Buckhorn Lake Resort. It is located near Kerrville, Texas in the Hill Country. This part of Texas is beautiful.
We are able to stay here for the RV-Dreams rally price of $30/night. Our site is 1st class: full hookups, two water spigots and level concrete pads.
We arrived at the resort a day before many others so we could play in the golf tournament. We had seven golfers signed up and had a fun time at the Scott Schreiner Muncipal Golf Course.Pam and I enjoyed our time except for a few holes. She commented later that my play on hole number 12 reminded her of the tv commercial and "Shankopotamus". Yep-- I had three in a row and held some folks up as I waded through the high grass and weeds around the green for a bit...

When we returned from the golf course, we met John and Carol who were here for the rally.
They are from Indiana and regular Roadrunner Chronicles readers. It was nice of them to stop by and spend some time with us. They are planning on full-timing after their house sells which they will be putting on the market the first of next year.

It was a beautiful evening and we grilled some pork cutlets outside for dinner.
Later, we went over to Guadalupe River RV Park in Kerrville to see Walt Chapman. He hired a lot of us high school kids for part time jobs back in the 1970's. While we were in Santa Fe last week I got to see his two sons, Mike and Billy, who are big supporters of the local Habitat for Humanity effort there and run Chapman Homes along with their sister Beverly.

It was great to see everyone in the last two weeks. After we left the campground seeing Walt, we saw this beautful sunset. That concludes another posting of the Roadrunner Chronicles. See you next time!

Onward to Kerrville, TX

We liked our small RV site at Fort Bliss outside of El Paso, TX. I had concrete sites which were level, full hookups with 50 amp service. It was a good value for $14.
We drove all the way from El Paso to Kerrville TX without incident. We passed through some beautiful Texas Hill country along I-10 and stopped a couple of times along the way.
The sometimes-cloudy skies had very little rain so our makeshift wiper blade repair went untested. We were glad for that.We arrived about 5:30 and pulled into our site. After we got set up and situated, we joined the RV-Dreams group across the street at Howard and Linda's rig.

We are here for the RV-Dreams rally that gets underway on Wednesday. Howard's web site was one of the most informational places I found on the internet to answer our many questions as prepared to RV Full Time. It was great to finally meet them in person. More rally news from the Buckhorn Lake Resort in the next edition of the Roadrunner Chronicles. Thanks for stopping by.

On the road again--- heading for Kerrville

We left the Rodeo grounds after early morning good byes to our fellow Care-A-Vanners. About half way to Albuquerque, we stopped at the San Idelfonso fuel stop and spent $272.45 on diesel. I think that is the most we have ever spent on one stop. We have a 150 gallon tank.

We were heading for El Paso TX.
Ever since we left Kansas, we have noticed the engine missing on up hill grades. It is something we are going to get checked out in Dallas in a couple of weeks. I think it needs a tune up and just regular servicing. It has been about 7,000 plus miles since the last oil change, fuel filter change etc.

Outside of Albuquerque and were met by a sky filled with hot air balloons. We forgot that this weekend is the first of the Balloon Fiesta. Those balloons are really something to watch. They were all around us as we drove by Fiesta Park. I understand they have about 550 balloons from all over the world. We were hoping to catch the cow in the air but we were only to snap a shot of it just after it landed as we drove by. It was neat to see all the ballons as we drove through Albuquerque.I turned into a cloudy and rainy day but we made good time through Las Cruces and onto El Paso. Just outside of El Paso our wiper blade came loose. The piece that snaps it into place went flying before I could turn off the wipers. We tried a couple of sizes but the windshield is pretty large and I need a 31 1/2 blade.

Not many places carry those. We tried a 28 inch blade but the arm/loop where the blade connects to the wiper is just to large. For the time being, I did some carving on the 28 inch piece and put some duct tape on it. We'll have to go without until we can special order another one.

We stayed at Ft Bliss Army RV campground. What a nice place. The sites have full hookups, are cement pads and are all pull through sites. Someone was thinking when they built this place. We arrived about 2:20 PM and they had two sites left. Perfect since we only need one. And for $14 it was fine.

We got some groceries, hunted for a wiper blade and went back to the campground. I took three loads of wash to the laundromat on site while Pam cooked some pizza. She brought dinner to the laundromat as the last load was drying. We went back to the Roadrunner and watched Tennessee get beat pretty soundly then called it a night.

We are looking forward to our first RV rally in Kerrville. More next time from there.

Last Day in Santa Fe

We went out to the build site for our last day working with Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity. It was a really fun morning because everyone that wanted to was swinging hammers. Some of us got to get on the walls and help put up rafters. At lunch, Maggie (Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity -SFHFH Executive Director) came out and thanked everyone and the Care-A-Vanners in particular for the help and work during the last two weeks. It was a very nice gesture.
After lunch Pam and I went back to the Gomez house with Eliza (Santa Fe local volunteer construction supervisor) and finished putting up a small section of the latilla aka 'coyote fence'.Then we went back to the Roadrunner, dumped the tanks, did some packing and went downtown to Santa Fe. We went to the Plaza where the museums are free after 5:00 on Fridays. We toured the recently opened New Mexico History Museum (sorry no pictures inside allowed) and to the Palace of Governors. Both were very well done and worth the time to see.
Back in the late 60's I went to high school a few blocks from downtown Santa Fe. We found a place that still served Frito Pies. A small bag of Fritos corn chips, three heaps of chili, some shredded cheese (all in the bag) and we called it dinner!
We sat on a plaza bench and watched the tourists for a while.

Then we went over to see Shelly and Lucky (Care-A-Vanners) from Colorado who are at another campground, and said our good-byes.

Next, we came back home and I finished copying some CDs of photos I will give to our fellow Care-A-Vanners before we leave this morning.

Hasta la vista, Santa Fe--hola Texas! --- our next stop.

Thanks for checking out the Roadrunner Chronicles. See you next time.

Fundraiser, Work and Dinner with Friends

Today started a little early for us. We left at 7:10 so we could help serve at the Habitat for Humanity breakfast fundraiser. It started at 8:30 and we had 25 tables to take care of. Devin, our volunteer coordinator did a great job of keeping us moving with the right order of food and drink out to the guests.
The keynote speaker was Henry Cisneros, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Clinton administration.
It was a great success with almost 200 attendees. Habitat de Santa Fe hoped to raise $90,000 so they could finance another house. Initial tallies were well over $140,00. It was quite a success. The Executive Director of Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity (in the turquoise dress with Mr. Cisneros and another gentlemen) did quite a job on this!

Later in the morning, we went to the Oshara Village job site and did some work before lunch. The new house is really coming along. After lunch, Pam and I were assigned to go downtown to another home and finish up some work on the porch and the fence. We were glad to do it and we worked with Eliza, a volunteer construction supervisor.
Later in the evening, we had dinner at Tomasita's - another great choice for Mexican food in Santa Fe. Mike and Debbie, Bob and Annetta, and Pam and I had a great time over dinner catching up a bit.Tomorrow will be our last work day in Santa Fe with Habitat for Humanity. It has been a real good time here for us working, meeting new people and re-connecting with friends. We look forward to more time volunteering on future Habitat projects.

Thanks for checking out the Roadrunner Chronicles. Be sure and leave a comment~we'd love to hear from you.

Roadrunner Financials - September 2009

Recap of the month:
We started out September in western South Dakota in the Bad Lands.  We visited Custer State Park and the surrounding area including the incomparable Mt Rushmore.  We went south through Greensburg Kansas, stopping long enough to be "Volunteers in Missions" with friends Susan and Kirk.  Then it was on to Albuquerque to see Reid and Amy and before we went up to Santa Fe to participate in our first Habitat for Humanity "Care-A-Vanners" build.

Here is what our expenses looked for the month of September:
Overall for the month -
Almost $600 under budget was pretty good!

Areas we were under budget -
- Our $1000 budget for diesel fuel was very conservative so we were way under that.
- We averaged $9.01/night on campgrounds.  We stayed one night in a Walmart parking lot, three nights parked in a church parking lot in Greensburg, KS while volunteering, and  the last ten days of the month at the Rodeo Grounds in Santa Fe at $15/nigh.

Biggest expenses for the month -
- Our biggest expense for the month was getting our car and RV registered in South Dakota for another year,

Large 'One Time Cost Item(s)' -
- We had no big items to purchase in September.

Monthly average since we started tracking in June 2009 -
That was what the numbers looked like after four months on the road.  Thanks for joining us on the Roadrunner Chronicles.
