In February,  we continued our stay at Sea Mist (military campground) at Dam Neck Annex in Virginia Beach.  We have been here since mid - December and plan on staying until about mid - May.

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget

We didn't drive the motor home this month, so there was no need to get any diesel fuel.

We underspent in:

• Diesel fuel
• Campgrounds
• TV
• Mail, and
• Household items

Biggest Expenses
We overspent in the following areas:

• Propane (we were going through it with the cold weather but only have to refill it once during the winter)
• Car Maintenance (maintenance on 8 yr old vehicle including hoses, plugs, radiator and hydraulic system flush)
• Misc (gifts, clothes, boots and shoes)

Highest 1 Time Cost Item
The system flush and maintenance on the car was $1039.

Monthly Average
Here's a look at the monthly averages for the last six months.

We had another tough month and was a little higher than what we did with the budget in January.  After all the months of maintenance and medical it's nice to get the spending closer to our target.  But we are still way behind for the fiscal year which began in June 2016.

That's another look at where our money went during the second month of the new calendar year.

Roadrunner Financials - January 2017

In January,  we stayed parked at Sea Mist (military campground) at Dam Neck Annex in Virginia Beach.  We have been here since mid - December and plan on staying until about mid - May.

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget

We didn't drive the motor home this month, so there was no need to get any diesel fuel.

Biggest Expenses
We overspent in the following areas:

• RV Insurance (our renewal in May brought the payment to above the yearly monthly estimate)
• Car Insurance (after two no-fault claims, our insurance went up)
• Car Maintenance (complete yearly checkup with induction service, new plugs, wiper blades)
• Misc (gifts, clothes, boots and shoes)

Highest 1 Time Cost Item
The diagnostic service and maintenance on the car was $415.  Time to look for another mechanic.

Monthly Average

We had a very good month and almost came it at the budget.  We were only $22 which is a win in my book.  After all the months of maintenance and medical it's nice to bring down the monthly average again by over $150.  But we are still way behind for the fiscal year which began in June.

Biggest Expenses

Highest 1 Time Cost Item
We had toppers replaced at Brannons and also had a list of things for him to check out including replacing the motor on one of the fans, troubleshooting a faulty light switch, replacing the 'eye' on our DirecTV, and downloading new software for our Razor Over-the-Air antenna.  $1400.

Monthly Average

The hits just keep on coming...We were $2100 over budget this month and the average climbed another couple hundred dollars again.

So this is a look at where our money went during the second month of the new year.

November was fun month.  After Hurricane Matthew tore up our topper, we knew we'd have to go back to Red Bay before Christmas.  As it worked out we got to see a couple of State Capitols, a lot of Florida including time at Key West, and also stop for a quick visit with relatives in Maynardville TN.

• RV and Car Maintenance (replaced two chassis batteries)

Seems as if the chassis batteries were the high items this month:  $$641

This was the best month average-wise that we have had in quite a while.  Still though, it only brought down our year-to-date average a couple of hundred bucks.

Roadrunner Financials - October 2016

In October,  we stayed in Virginia Beach for the entire month.  A highlight taking a day trip up to Fairfax VA and celebrating Adam and Melissa's 1st wedding anniversary by going out to dinner with them.

Biggest Expenses
Once again our biggest expenses were in:

• RV and Car Maintenance (had the clock spring replaced in the Honda -$695)
• Groceries and Eating Out
• Medical (Teeth cleaning, root canal and a crown)

Highest 1 Time Cost Item
Biggest expense was was the crown ($900) but the root canal was right behind it at $839.

Monthly Average

The high monthly averages continue.  We were still almost $1600 over budget.  Tooth issues will do that to you.
You can also see how we have been doing the last four months on maintenance.  Between that and medical, we are way over where we want to be.

Biggest Expenses
We were over our budget in the following areas:

• Gas for the car
• Maintenance
• Cell phone use (primarily our wifi/data plan) and 
• Medical (the bills for my July retina surgery

Large One Time Cost Item
Our biggest budget buster for the month was in the maintenance area while we were in Red Bay AL.  We had work done at Bay Diesel (Koni shocks) ($1580) and also had a list of things done at Brannon's (Custom RV) ($1630).

We September was another tough month on the budget.  The maintenance and medical areas were the culprits this time.

Our monthly averages continue to climb and we will be over our 'hoped for' $4100 monthly budget for the year which ends next month at the end of May.  But we have had an extraordinary amount of Maintenance and Medical bills this year.

In August, we left Portland, OR and headed estate and then south from Sioux Falls to Memphis TN,.  The big event was recovering from my retina detachment surgery in Portland where we stayed from the last week of July into the middle of August.

We spent the month leaving Portland and taking a route east through Montana and into Wyoming.  We were able to see the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, the spacious and scenic Montana vistas and we stopped at the Custer / Little Big Horn Memorial Historic Site.  We ended up in Memphis were we took in the fun Graceland home and museum.  It was a busy month!

Our monthly average  is still sadly way above what we were hoping for.  The RV Maintenance and paying for high season campground sites also were factors in our overage.

This was a big month for us.  We finished up our reunion, spent time out near Yosemite National Park, and then rode up the Oregon Coast.  It was a special month.  And -- I had a medical event that culminated in a detached retina and then surgery.  We had the surgery in Portland and continued east along the Columbia River Gorge after I was given the OK to travel.

Large One Time Cost Item
I lost my mind at a Convenience Center that had big trucks fueling up.  I grabbed the gas nozzle and emptied about 15 gallons into the diesel running Roadrunner.  By the time we got towed, drained the tanks and back on the road, our numbers in that category swelled to $1117!

Monthly Average

Our monthly average is still on a rising glidepath!  Yikes -- I keep thinking this is going to turn around but unforced errors were the culprit this month.  Hopefully, I will be more attentive and we'll find some cheaper campgrounds.

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget

Though we drove a lot of miles in June, we still we under budget on our fuel.

Biggest Expenses
Campgrounds were a big challenge for us and we decided to not sweat it.  High season is the summer time in most places (especially in California) and the costs go up.  

Large One Time Cost Item
Our large one-time cost was for air fare and associated travel for Pam to attend a funeral of a friend back in Virginia Beach.

Monthly Average
 Since this is the first month of our 'fiscal year', this is also the average as we begin 'Living the Dream', Year 8!  We sold our home, downsized, bought the Roadrunner and left Fairfax, VA in June 2009 and have been full-timers ever since then.

We made the decision to attend my brothers reunion out in the Sierras of California.  At first we were not going to go because we planned on being on the East Coast this summer.  Then we decided to attend and were going to fly out there.

But in the end, we opted to drive out and we took a pretty much straight route across the states to make it there by the end of June.

We had a pretty good month moneywise considering how far we drove and paid for fuel. We also ate too much and spent too much for Christmas.

Our biggest spending was in the following areas:

• New insurance that put us over the old budget
• Fuel and 
• Eating Out

Large One Time Cost Item
Though it wasn't a large item, we did pay for a yearly membership with CoachNet for $79.

Monthly Average

Our monthly average ended our fiscal year (June- May) with the un happy number just over $4903.  We can't do much about our medical and maintenance events that need to be taken care of so we did.  This is the on a glide path that we can not sustain, so we opted to look into taking Social Security to relieve some of the stress on our wallet.

Thus far, we have not dipped into long term savings or 401(k) plans to fund our lifestyle and we want to keep it that way.

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget

Our budget took a major hit with our power steering and new struts we needed in the Honda CRV.

We had a very good month budget-wise.  We drove a lot and therefore paid for a lot of gasoline.  We also ate too much and spent too much for Christmas.

Biggest Expenses
We were way over in over in our cell phone bill this month.  We had few places to use wifi so it ate into our data plan.

Large One Time Cost Item
Maintenance on our Honda CRV cost us over $4200 this month!  We had a new power steering unit put in and we needed new struts.  So we had it all done.  The car runs better but these big bills are hard to swallow.  --It still better than buying a new car.

Roadrunner Financials - February 2016

Roadrunner Recap
In February, we visited the following locations along the Florida Gulf Coast and into Central Florida:

• Twelve Oaks RV Campground, Sanford FL
• Rodman Campground, Palatka FL
• Pelican Roost RV Campground, Mayport FL
• Macon Area Habitat Campground, Macon GA

After our time near Orlando, we moved to Rodman Campground to explore more of interior Florida. Then it was off to a great military campground in Mayport.  The Pelican Roost campground is on the waterfront of the St. John's River with a lot of commercial and naval military traffic.

Next, we moved more north to our Care-A-Vanner build in Macon GA.  That's always a fun one because we get to see old friends including Pam's Maid-of-Honor, Barbara.

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget
We did pretty well in spending for the month in areas of fuel, campgrounds, and groceries.  Most
of it had to do with the fact we camped for free at the Habitat for Humanity site in Macon GA and did very little eating out while we were there.

We had a very good month budget-wise but were not able to avoid the unexpected RV maintenance with the broken tailpipe which accounted for our overrun.

Biggest Expenses
We got new cell phones and switched from AT&T to Verizon in January.  The expected savings did not present itself.  In fact for a while, we were paying off the old bill and for the new coverage while we were gathering information to get reimbursed by our new carrier.

Large One Time Cost Item
The biggest item on the spreadsheet during the month was our $1997 bill for a broken exhaust pipe.  While leaving Rodman Campground near Palatka FL we noticed a strange sound in the engine.  Later, exhaust smoke was coming in the PS window so we had to close it.  Those two items turned out to be a tailpipe that broke at the exhaust manifold.

We were heading to a Habitat for Humanity Care-A-Vanner build in Macon GA and ended up getting the repairs done there.
Monthly Average

The basic story here is that we are on a clip for the first eight months of the Roadrunner FY (June 2015-May 2016) to spend a lot more money than we would like.  But this 'budget' I have often send is really more of a record of spending.  We seldom limit ourselves because of where the budget is.  This does give us a pretty good idea though, of where our money is going compared to what our planning goals are.

So this is a look at where our money went during the second month of the new year.

Roadrunner Financials - January 2016

In January, we visited the following locations along the Florida Gulf Coast and into Central Florida:

• 12 Oaks RV Campground, Sanford FL       

One of our goals in 2016 was to see more of Florida.  We love certain areas of the state and end up sometimes missing out on the 'backcountry'.  In January we found ourselves in Cedar Key and learned a little bit about the history of that area.
Then it was onto MacDill AFB in Tampa.  We saw friends and visited one of the nation's largest RV shows.  We also spent time in Lakeland, FL seeing Marg and Bill before we moved on to the Orlando area and saw more friends there.


Good News Areas We Are Under Budget

We had a very good month budget-wise.  We drove a lot and therefore paid for a lot of diesel but were still under budget.  We also ate too much and spent too much for Christmas.

Biggest Expenses
One area was an increase in medical.  We had dental bills and also decided to both go to a Physical Therapist which was a bit pricey but we were interested in learning how to deal with foot, tendonitis and flexibility issues.

Large One Time Cost Item
Our biggest overrun was in the area of eating out which is a recurring theme for us.

We are still recovering from out big month to get the Roadrunner engine fixed in August.  That month was a big one for us.  But we have steadily decreased our spending so our averages look better.

We are still recovering from out big month to get the Roadrunner engine fixed in August.  That month was a big one for us.  But we have steadily decreased our spending so our averages look better.

We left Virginia Beach after Pam and Kelly's birthdays and had an overnight stay en route to Maynardville TN.  While in TN, we spent time with Joan and Mike other extended family.  On to Florida and the Pensacola beach where we were treated with warm weather and a chance to check in with Linda and Bill who live there.

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget

We had a good month with the budget and noted that costs for diesel fuel, campgrounds and Misc were well under budget.

Biggest Expenses
Our biggest expense for the month was the semi-annual car insurance payment.  

Large One Time Cost Item
Our largest one time item was buying meat at the local Harris Teeter Grocery store.  We had eaten at Jon and Kelly's a number of times.  Though we don't actually keep too close a tabs on how much they spent feeding us, we felt it was our turn to buy some groceries including a large piece ($161) of tenderloin that he subsequently cut into about 12 steaks.

For the second month in a row, we were significantly below our goal of $4,100 per month.  The monthly average continues to decline after a tough RV maintenance bill in August.

Roadrunner Financials - October 2015

Roadrunner Recap
In October, we were at Lake Fairfax Campground, Reston VA for Adam and Melissa's Wedding.  After that, we drove down to Richmond VA and saw some of the Civil War museums and the Virginia State Capitol.  Most of the month we spent at the Sea Mist Campground at Ocean NAS, Virginia Beach.

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget
We didn't spend any on diesel fuel this month which was nice. RV and Car Maintenance, Groceries, and the Misc categories all looked pretty good.

Biggest Expenses
On the other hand, we spend a lot on Campgrounds.  Most of the expenses related to Adam and Melissa's wedding on October 3 were incurred in September.

Large One Time Cost Item
We paid our RV and Car registration for the next year and it was $840.

Monthly Average

Even though we had a good month expense-wise, we continue to be well over budget for the year after our big hit in August getting the Roadrunner fixed.

In September we visited the following locations stretching from

Good News Areas We Are Under Budget

We did pretty good on the gas costs and were under budget for maintenance.  


Biggest Expenses
I think I may have entered some October receipts here in September but once I enter it in the spreadsheet, I throw it away.  So I really have no way of telling.  As I look at October expenses, I am guessing that is what I did.

Large One Time Cost Item
Our largest cost item(s) probably had to do with the wedding but we would gladly do it again.
Campgrounds were high because we spent 10 days in Fairfax and had to pay top dollar there.
Groceries and eating out were high as well as Household items.

Monthly Average
We traveled from Florida to Fairfax VA so we had a couple of fill ups in the Roadrunner.

We were considerable over this month but my hope is that we can hold back on a lot of big dollar items within the next few months.  Our budget year goes from Jun-May so we have a few months to 'catch up'.As always, if you think this spreadsheet might be useful I'd be glad to pass it along at no cost.  Just let me know.
