The project began in 2002 with its first mural painted by artist Robert Dafford. The idea began after a visit by some townspeople to the flood wall murals in Paducah, KY. (Another town to put on our 'Visit List'.) I liked the way it is laid out with the mural, then a plaque in front of the painting explaining its significance. We learned a lot just by strolling along the walk way and reading about the city's history and heritage.
Here's a couple of things I didn't know:
The origin of the 'Teddy Bear' -
And the first one to put Coca Cola in a bottle -
Some history:
After our time down on the Riverfront, we went by the old store owned by Joseph Biedenharn that first bottled Coca Cola.
Great little town. We've stopped in Vicksburg a couple of times. The last time, it was a dreary rainy type of day. Oh yeah, we also left a deposit at the Ameristar Casino, did you happen to pick it up?
ReplyDeletemmmmmm Coke Cola. Hope to go there someday.
ReplyDeleteI got hooked on murals too, and participate in Mural Monday on Oakland Daily Photo's blog. If you go to my blog and click on the mural tag on the left hand side of the page all my mural posts have links to his meme. People post from all over the world and it's really cool to see how different cultures affect the type of murals in different places. I'll add Vicksburg and Paducah to my list of places to travel through now!
ReplyDeleteThe murals are beautiful! Kevin and I may have to stop in Vicksburg on our way up North in July.
ReplyDeleteI do remember those murals:)
