Apparently these chickens have been on the island over 150 years. And their numbers grew in the 1950's when the Cuban population in Key West was at its highest. Among other things, the roosters were bred for cockfighting but that was outlawed in the 1970's.
The chickens now roam the island freely and are good for a double take or a picture...

Roosters are one of the many colorful attractions here in Key West. We have been here over six weeks and have another week to go before it will be time to move on.
Thanks for joining us today on the Roadrunner Chronicles! Until next time...

ReplyDeleteI was amazed to see so many people in Key West today. I liked the chickens and had just said to Kathy that we will be awakened at Sun up by those roosters. We will explore the town tomorrow and check out the RV camp on the Navy base Friday. The weather is perfect here, no wonder you have stayed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a hoot! The rosters are really beautiful though.
ReplyDeletejust like living on the farm...which I did when I was 12-13 years old..I still love the sound of the "cockadoodledoo"!...(standing on the Rio Grande in Roma, you can hear them crowing in Mexico too.)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThat is so interesting about the chickens. I have another FB and blogging RV friend who is there also, and has put up photos and comments about the chickens, too. I wonder if your paths have crossed!
