Floresville

We left Kerrville about 8:45 AM and had a nice drive to Floresville, TX.  We got off I-10 and headed southeast from San Antonio to highway Texas 181.  It was a very nice drive and a good divided highway.

We got into Floresville about 10:30 and found Linda's place near town.  She has a big farm and plenty of space for us to park the Roadrunner.

We got set up and sat outside for a while and yakking away when she asked what time it was, and sure enough, we were supposed to be in town to meet Tisha and Gene for lunch in a few minutes.

We got to the Maverick Grill a few minutes after noon.  I love these kind of places.  A local hangout with great food and a lot of personality.  We joined Tisha, Gene and Linda.  Pam and I split a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, green beans and iced tea.  Yum!

Gene owns and operates the Midway Automotive Repair Shop next door.

We took a quick tour.  I admire small businessmen because they pound it out every day.  His business seems to be doing well.  Good honest mechanics sometimes are hard to find, but he is one of them!

Next we took a ride downtown Floresville and went to the Wilson County Courthouse which is the focal point of the historic part of town.

The cotton industry and cattle industry were robust when the trains came through the area in the 1870's and 1880's which significantly enhanced the economy.

Floresville was named after Don Francisco Flores de Abrego, a rancher whose family donated land in 1867 to establish the town.

Of note is the peanut display in the yard of the courthouse.  It acknowledges the role of the peanut industry has played in the region since it was introduced in 1916.

Who knew that peanuts are grown in this part of Texas?  I knew pecans thrive in the hill country of Texas, but didn't realize peanuts are big here too.

Also - Floresville is the birthplace of John B. Connally who was in the limousine in Dallas when President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.  He recovered and went on to become a member of President Nixon's cabinet as Treasury Secretary.

In the afternoon, we went back to Linda's and sat and chatted some more, then got inspired and cleaned up her carport and back porch.

She is hosting a birthday party this weekend so it was nice to make some room for the food and festivities.  Next, we grilled some chicken and had a nice dinner and chatted a while more before we called it a night.

We are really enjoying the beautiful place and the gorgeous weather here.
